Biomedical research fields and JCR disciplines

Documents (articles and reviews) indexed in the Web of Science (WOS) were classified according to Thomson-Reuters 250 categories (JCR disciplines), which depend on the journal where they are published. The JCR disciplines were subsequently classified into 22 fields, according to the Essential Science Indicators (ESI). Finally, the ESI fields were classified into 8 broad research areas: Clinical Medicine, Biology & Biochemistry, Pharmacology & Toxicology, Molecular Biology & Genetics, Neuroscience & Behavior, Microbiology, Immunology and Psychiatry/Psychology. These fields constitute the Biomedicine area considered for this study.

ESI fields

The 8 fields composing the area of biomedicine, and their respective JCR disciplines were compared according to 7 indicators: 1) number of HCP in which researchers in Spain played a leading role, that is, in which researchers were first, last or corresponding author, (Leading HCP's), 2) total number of HCP (HCP's), 3) Relative HCP (RHCP), 4) number of Outstanding Papers in which researchers in Spain played a leading role (Leading OP's), 5) total number of OP (OP's), 6) number of authors affiliated with an organization in the respective regions playing a leading role (Leading Authors), 7) total number of authors affiliated with an organization in the respective regions (Authors).
