Territorial distribution of HCPs in Spain

Spain is integrated by 19 nations and regions (Autonomous Communities), which correspond to the second level of the Nomenclature of Units for Territorial Statistics (NUTS 2) of the European Union. The HCPs were located in Spain by associating the postal address of the authors’ host institution(s) to the city(ies) reported therein, giving full credit of the HCP to every different city. Thus, adding the number of HCP per CCAA will deliver a greater number of documents than the actual number of HCP included in the study, as a single HCP will be counted as many times as the number of different addresses reported that given HCP.

Territorial analysis

Autonomous Communities in Spain were compared in terms of 7 indicators: 1) number of HCP in which researchers in Spain played a leading role (Leading HCP's), 2) total number of HCP (HCP's), 3) Relative concentration of HCP (RHCP), 4) number of Outstanding Papers in which researchers in Spain played a leading role (Leading OP's), 5) total number of OP (OP's), 6) number of authors affiliated with an organization in the respective regions playing a leading role (Leading Authors), 7) total number of authors affiliated with an organization in the respective regions (Authors).
